The Fisheries Committee (PECH) of the European Parliament  (EP) is holding a public hearing on "Management of fisheries resources and fishing fleet in the EU in the context of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) reform".

Invited speakers will focus on the objectives of fisheries management, in particular on the concept of "Maximum Sustainable Yield" (MSY), the reduction of fishing mortality, the size of EU fishing fleets and the role of vessel size, gear types and technical measures in regulating fleet capacity and effort. The hearing will be streamed live on the European Parliament's website.

OCEAN2012 members are attending the hearing and are calling on Members of the
European Parliament (MEPs) to support the European Commission's proposal:

  • To restore and maintain populations of harvested species above levels which can produce MSY by 2015; and
  • To implement the precautionary and ecosystem_based approach to fisheries management.

Back to back with the PECH Committee hearing, OCEAN2012 is also hosting two briefings for European decision-makers, with fisheries management expert, George Geiger, former chairman of the South Atlantic Fishery Management Council and charter fishing captain. Geiger will share his experience of setting science based fishing limits and how this has resulted in more fish and more viable fisheries.
