Fishing at risk of sinking

Empty nets and a new European law that risks sinking fishing. To reverse the severe decline of fish stocks, Brussels is proposing a way to regulate the catch that has already been introduced in Denmark. Donatella Bogo from the Italian paper 'Corriere della Sera' went to investigate.

Lost at sea

New research reveals huge loss of jobs and profits due to overfishing of EU stocks. Research published by the new economics foundation (nef) finds that poor management of fish stocks is draining jobs and profits. The report Jobs Lost at Sea estimates the benefits of rebuilding 43 European stocks (out of more than 150).

Official report confirms massive misuse of EU fisheries funds

Brussels -  The EU Court of Auditors today published a report damning costly failures to eliminate overfishing in Europe. The report found that the multi-billion euro European Fisheries Fund designed to balance fishing activities at sustainable levels is actually doing the reverse. Loopholes mean that fleet owners are receiving subsidies to increase the capacity and fishing power of their vessels, adding to fleet overcapacity.

OCEAN2012 calls EU fisheries subsidies ‘Blind Spending’

New online database of €1.1 billion in EU fisheries subsidies; concerns about declining data standards

Fishsubsidy.org, the transparency project which in 2009 launched an online database of EU fisheries subsidies from 1994 to 2006, has launched a new database of payments under the European Fisheries Fund, from 2007 to 2010.
