To MSY and beyond: achieving healthy stocks to achieve healthy seas

    NOVEMBER 23 2011

  • Briefing

    Fleet overcapacity is driving overfishing

    NOVEMBER 24 2011
    OCEAN2012 and NGOs

The vast majority of European fish stocks are being fished unsustainably. Fleet overcapacity is one of the main drivers behind overfishing of most or all of these stocks. This briefing looks at why overcapacity is a problem, where and how it should be reduced and how job losses can be reduced, before going on to outline recommendations in response the Commission's proposal to reform the Common Fisheries Policy.

    Public aid for sustainable fisheries

    FEBRUARY 22 2012
    OCEAN2012 and NGOs

Public aid has been identified as a driver for overfishing. The proposed European Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF) must ensure that future aid does not undermine the objectives of the CFP, but contributes to the transition to sustainable fisheries and towards achieving healthy marine ecosystems.

Access Criteria to Reward Responsible Fishing

    DECEMBER 21 2011
    OCEAN2012 and NGOs

This briefing argues for the need to give preferential access to fish resources as a reward to those who fish in the most sustainable way. Our organisations propose that access to fish resources be based on a set of transparent criteria for environmentally and socially sustainable practices, rewarding those who perform well against these benchmarks.
