NGOs urge improvements to Fisheries Committee working document on the EU Maritime and Fisheries Fund (EMFF)

Brussels, September 18 2012

BirdLife Europe, Greenpeace, Oceana, OCEAN2012 and WWF work together for an ambitious reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) which should:

  • restore fish stocks to healthy levels;
  • end overfishing by shifting to environmentally sustainable fishing practices; and
  • reduce damage to marine ecosystems.

Efforts to eliminate EU subsidies that incentivise andsupport overfishing, and shift funds to support sustainable fisheries and healthy marine ecosystems play a crucial role in achieving these objectives.

Alain Cadec’s draft report includes several improvements to the Commission proposal but fails to live up to the need for a fundamental reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and its associated funding instrument.
